Aberdeen's Art Studio's
Artist Statement:
For my Sense of Place assignment I chose to photograph two specific locations in Aberdeen SD. The first location I photographed was the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center (ARCC) and then I photographed both the printmaking and sculpture studios on Northern’s campus. I chose these locations for this assignment because these spaces have had a big impact on my life as a creator. I first started going to the ARCC when I was 3 years old and as I grew up, I was able to partake in many of the art opportunities that it offered. I also chose to document the studios at Northern because they are where I spend most of my time and where a lot of my memories are made. Rather than focus on the studios as bigger units I decided to document the smaller aspects of the spaces and capture the minute details that are often overlooked when working on projects. I wanted to highlight the materials and tools that help artists create and emphasize the details that differentiate one studio from another. To do this I took shallow depth of field and close up shots of different art mediums such as paint and tools like brushes, palettes, and brayers. The narrative I am portraying through these photos is the process of creation. By looking closer at the mediums and tools that artists use, we can see the creative process evolve even without seeing a finished work.
