Artist Statement:
My concept for this assignment revolved around the idea of beauty, specifically targeting how preference can affect perception of beauty and attraction. I wanted to focus on this concept because I have seen a big push on beauty trends and what constitutes ideal beauty within today’s media outlets. I titled this work Build a Beauty being inspired by the famous franchise Build a Bear’s process of how their products are produced. Emphasizing the faults of the beauty industry’s process and accentuating the correlation to Build a Bear, I focused on taking photos of different forms and parts of the human body. I decided to concentrate on specific areas of the female figure, photographing both the model and me singly. I then began to play with overlapping one on top of the other and adjusting the opacity of the top image. The areas I decided to focus on for this collection were shoes/legs, torso, and back. The main technique I used to create these images was strobe lighting in the studio. I chose strobe lighting because it gave me the stark contrast I needed to make the editing and overlaying development easier. I also chose strobe lighting over continuous because I wanted a brighter/cooler toned background where continuous light would have given the photos a warmer tone overall. I feel like this collection is valuable because each photo can be viewed individually before viewing the  combined images of each model. While looking at the photos, the viewer is taking part of the Build a Beauty process even if they are not aware of it. Having the overlaid images at the end of the work highlights my main concept “beauty is based on preference not a set standard.”
